Texas University Standardize on Mimer SQL
Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas, USA, has signed a site agreement with Upright Database Technology enabling them to use Mimer SQL Engine for their internal administrative systems and in all their education and research.
Sam Houston State University (SHSU), with more than 13,000 students on a classic campus area in Huntsville, Texas, USA, has begun a project to refresh its administrative software (see http://www.shsu.edu/~ucs_www/update/dec2002/). A key element of this solution is Mimer SQL, the relational database management system (DBMS) from Upright Database Technology in Uppsala, Sweden. All the administrative data, today stored in hundreds of data files on the university’s Alpha OpenVMS system, will be replaced by one single Mimer SQL database. Another part of the site agreement between SHSU and Upright is that the university has unlimited access to free Mimer SQL licenses in all education and research.
"Mimer SQL was selected, in part, because it’s the only DBMS that is 100% in conformity with the international SQL standard”, says James A. Stevens, Jr, Associate Vice President for Information Resources, Sam Houston State niversity. “For a state university, the standard conformity of Mimer SQL is important in helping us becoming independent of specific products and vendors”, concludes James A. Stevens, Jr.
“With our own roots at Uppsala University, we’re very pleased to sign this agreement with Sam Houston State University”, says Olof Edlund, CEO Upright Database Technology. “We have for several years offered the Swedish universities free Mimer SQL licenses for their education and research, and in our new market strategy, we’re extending this offer also to international universities”, continues Olof Edlund.
